Health Universe Raises $6 Million to Advance Healthcare AI
Health Universe, a San Francisco-based company specializing in the infrastructure for deploying, sharing, and monetizing health AI applications, has successfully raised $6 million in funding. The investment round, which took place on March 19, 2026, was led by Kleiner Perkins, with participation from Susa Ventures, Twelve Below, and Oncology Ventures.
Company Overview
Founded by Dan Caron, who serves as CEO, and Douglas Fridsma, the Chief Medical Informatics Officer, Health Universe aims to revolutionize the healthcare industry by providing a platform for AI-driven innovation. The company offers tools that allow healthcare organizations to deploy auditable and compliant AI agents, targeting challenges such as clinician burnout, administrative overload, and the lengthy timelines associated with clinical trials.
Strategic Use of Funds
The newly acquired $6 million will be directed towards accelerating the adoption of Health Universe's AI solutions across academic medical centers, health systems, and life sciences organizations. The company plans to expand its AI infrastructure layer, which supports the deployment of autonomous and human-in-the-loop agents within a HIPAA-compliant environment.
Innovative AI Solutions
Health Universe's platform includes several key components:
- Navigator: Manages agents across patient records.
- Explorer: Facilitates population-level analysis.
- Observer: Monitors agent performance, costs, and risks.
The company has developed specialized agents for oncology and clinical trials. These agents streamline processes by converting fragmented medical records into structured summaries and automating trial protocol generation and regulatory workflows. Health Universe's oncology agents significantly reduce manual chart review time, while its clinical trial agents can cut setup timelines from six to nine months down to just over a week.
Regulatory Compliance and Impact
Committed to regulatory readiness, Health Universe's platform is ONC B.11 certified, participates in the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement network, and is SOC 2 Type II compliant, ensuring full HIPAA compliance. Since the launch of its Navigator platform, Health Universe has processed over 170 million clinical documents. Notably, at Duke Clinical Research Institute, their Project Loom initiative achieved a 93% time savings in key tasks and accelerated document processing tenfold.
Looking Ahead
With this new funding, Health Universe is poised to expand its reach and continue its mission of advancing healthcare innovation through AI. "Our goal is to create a seamless, compliant, and efficient AI ecosystem that addresses the critical challenges facing healthcare today," said CEO Dan Caron.
As Health Universe continues to grow, the company remains focused on enhancing its platform capabilities to meet the evolving needs of the healthcare industry.
