Zeno Secures $25 Million Series A Funding
Zeno, a company known for its innovative sport utility electric motorcycle, the Emara, has successfully raised $25 million in a Series A funding round. The round was led by Congruent Ventures, with additional participation from Active Impact, Lowercarbon Ventures, Camber Road, and Trifecta Capital. The company aims to expand its production capabilities and enhance its app-controlled battery-swap network in East Africa.
Company Overview
Founded by Alastair Sussock and Kenneth Micah, Zeno is pioneering the electric motorcycle market with its Emara model. The Emara is designed to offer a practical and cost-effective alternative to traditional internal combustion motorbikes, featuring a range of charging and energy solutions. Since its inception, Zeno has produced over 800 Emara motorcycles and established more than 150 charging locations across four cities in Kenya and Uganda.
Strategic Use of Funds
With the newly acquired funds, Zeno plans to accelerate the production of its Emara motorcycles to meet the growing demand. "The funding will enable us to expand our battery-swap network and increase production capacity," said Alastair Sussock, Co-Founder and Operations lead at Zeno. The company currently has a backlog of over 25,000 retail and fleet customers eager to purchase the Emara.
Market Potential
Motorbikes are a vital mode of transportation in East Africa, where Zeno is targeting its efforts. The Emara is particularly appealing to riders due to its lower operating costs—estimated to be 50% less than traditional bikes. The electric motorcycle can travel approximately 100 kilometers (60 miles) on a single charge and is capable of carrying up to 250 kilograms (550 pounds).
Funding Allocation
The $25 million raised includes $20.5 million in equity funding, with the remaining $4.5 million structured as a debt facility from Camber Road and Trifecta Capital. This financial boost is expected to help Zeno scale its operations and infrastructure to better serve its expanding customer base.
Future Outlook
Zeno's approach to the electric motorcycle market could significantly impact transportation in regions where motorbikes are essential. As the company continues to grow its network and production capabilities, it is well-positioned to capitalize on the increasing demand for sustainable and cost-effective transportation solutions in East Africa.
