Vertical Compute Raises $67 Million in Seed Funding
Vertical Compute, a semiconductor startup based in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, has successfully raised $67 million in a seed funding round. The round was led by Quantonation and saw participation from several other investors including Flanders Future Techfund, Wallonie Entreprendre, Sambrinvest, Noshaq, InvestBW, Drysdale Ventures, Kima Ventures, Eurazeo, XAnge, Vector Gestion, imec.xpand, and imec.
Founded in 2024 by Sebastien Couet, who serves as the CTO, and Sylvain Dubois, the CEO, Vertical Compute is developing vertically integrated memory technology designed to improve the efficiency of AI and high-performance computing systems. The company’s technology stacks memory directly on top of compute logic within a single wafer, significantly reducing the distance data must travel. This approach enhances memory density and bandwidth while minimizing latency and energy consumption compared to conventional 2D memory architectures.
Investment Details
The substantial seed funding round reflects strong investor confidence in Vertical Compute's innovative approach to overcoming the memory bottleneck in computing. Quantonation, a firm known for investing in deep tech and quantum technologies, led the funding round, underscoring the strategic importance of Vertical Compute’s technology in the evolving landscape of high-performance computing.
Planned Use of Funds
Vertical Compute plans to use the newly acquired funds to scale the production of its vertical memory chiplets and integrate them into existing processor architectures. The company will also focus on expanding its team and advancing research and development efforts. These steps aim to enable the deployment of high-density, low-power AI applications, which are increasingly critical in various technological fields.
As an imec spin-off, Vertical Compute benefits from a strong foundation in scientific research and execution capability. Tom Vanhoutte, Managing Partner at imec.xpand, remarked, "Vertical Compute brings together world-class scientific excellence and a remarkable capacity to execute."
The successful completion of this funding round marks a significant milestone for Vertical Compute as it continues to develop and refine its technology to meet the growing demands of the AI and high-performance computing sectors.
