Venus Aerospace Secures Major Investment for Rocket Engine Innovation

Venus Aerospace, a company known for its advancements in rocket engine technology, has successfully raised $90 million in a Series B funding round. This round was led by Mercury Fund, with participation from notable investors including Lockheed Martin Ventures, MESH, PEAK6, Draper Associates, Starboard Star Venture Capital, and Green Sands Equity.

Founded in 2020 by Andrew Duggleby and Sarah "Sassie" Duggleby, Venus Aerospace has been at the forefront of rocket engine innovation. The company specializes in developing the Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine (RDRE) and the Venus Detonation Rocket (VDR), which deliver enhanced efficiency, scalability, and performance for applications in defense, space, and high-speed commercial flight.

Shift in Focus

Initially focused on creating hypersonic jets for passenger travel, Venus Aerospace has shifted its attention towards hypersonic weapons and high-speed space vehicles. This change was prompted by the successful demonstration of their engine technology, which garnered significant interest from potential customers. "What happened when we flew last May is the world looked at us and said, 'oh my gosh, you have a working RDRE, would you sell us one?' And that wasnโ€™t what we were expecting," said CEO Sassie Duggleby.

Use of Funds

The newly acquired funds will primarily support the testing and development of specific vehicle designs that cater to the needs of defense and space missions. "Our propulsion architecture combines efficiency, throttling, reusability, and manufacturability in a way that customers need for real defense and space missions," explained CTO Andrew Duggleby. The company aims to translate its technical progress into reliable systems for operational use.
