V-Glass Raises $3 Million Seed Funding

V-Glass, an innovative research and development firm specializing in vacuum-insulated glass (VIG) technology, has successfully closed a $3 million seed funding round. The investment was led by the Grantham Foundation for the Protection of the Environment and its affiliate, Neglected Climate Opportunities.

Transition to Pilot Plant Production

Based in Waukesha, Wisconsin, V-Glass is advancing its production capabilities by moving from lab-scale operations to a pilot manufacturing plant. This transition marks a significant step toward the commercialization of its VIG technology. The firm is focused on creating a manufacturing platform that enables the low-cost production of vacuum insulated glass, which offers two to three times the thermal efficiency of ENERGY STAR-rated windows.

Michael Petit, Co-Founder and CEO of V-Glass, highlighted the importance of this development: "Windows are the weak thermal link in the built environment, comprising only 8% of building surface area while accounting for 45% of thermal energy loss."

Strategic Use of Funds

The newly acquired funds will primarily be used to enhance V-Glass's automation and manufacturing processes. This includes building infrastructure that supports larger scale production, aimed at facilitating broader market adoption of their high-performance, cost-effective VIG solutions.

Environmental and Energy Efficiency Goals

V-Glass’s technology is designed to tackle inefficiencies in buildings where windows contribute significantly to heat loss. Unlike traditional triple-pane windows and earlier VIG products, V-Glass aims to offer a more affordable solution without compromising on performance. The company emphasizes sustainability by using non-toxic materials that are fully recyclable, positioning their product as an environmentally friendly alternative.

Support from U.S. Department of Energy

Complementing this funding round, V-Glass recently received a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) under its GLASING program. This support aims to accelerate the development of advanced super-insulating glass technologies.

With the new funding and support from the Department of Energy, V-Glass is poised to advance its technology and manufacturing capabilities, bringing their innovative glass solutions closer to widespread use in the market.
