Sora Fuel Raises $14.6 Million in Latest Funding Round

Sora Fuel, a company specializing in converting air and water into jet fuel using renewable energy, has successfully raised $14.6 million in its latest funding round. The round was co-led by Spero Ventures and Inspired Capital, with additional participation from Engine Ventures and Wireframe Ventures.

Innovative Approach to Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Sora Fuel, co-founded by Gareth Ross (CEO) and Patrick Sarver (CSO), has developed a unique technology that captures carbon dioxide directly from the air and transforms it into syngas in a single step, simultaneously generating hydrogen. This process eliminates the expensive sorbent regeneration phase typically required in conventional direct air capture methods, thereby reducing costs significantly.

The company aims to leverage this technology to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at a competitive price point, with a target to capture carbon at less than $50 per ton and produce SAF at under $5 per gallon. These cost efficiencies have already sparked interest from energy companies, airlines, and aviation manufacturers, who are eager to explore potential offtake agreements.

Use of Funds

The newly acquired capital will be directed towards building and operating a pilot production facility. Sora Fuel plans to scale its production from gallons to barrels of drop-in sustainable aviation fuel within the next 18 to 24 months. This timeline represents an ambitious yet achievable goal for the venture-stage company, which is positioning itself to meet growing regulatory demands for sustainable aviation fuel in the U.S. and Europe.

Industry Context

Aviation is responsible for approximately 3% of global carbon emissions, and as demand for air travel rises, so does the urgency for sustainable solutions. While SAF is a promising path for decarbonization, its high production costs have been a barrier to widespread adoption. Sora Fuel's approach seeks to make SAF economically viable, potentially reaching cost parity with fossil fuels without subsidies.

Looking Ahead

With the backing of prominent investors and a clear plan for scaling production, Sora Fuel is well-positioned to make a significant impact in the sustainable aviation fuel sector. The company's innovative technology and cost-effective production methods could play a crucial role in reducing the carbon footprint of the aviation industry.
