River Raises $120 Million in Series C Funding

River, a Bengaluru-based electric vehicle startup, has successfully raised $120 million in a Series C funding round. The company, known for its durable and practical electric scooter model, the Indie, aims to use this investment to expand its manufacturing capabilities and introduce new models to the market.

Investors and Leadership

The funding round was led by Elev8 Venture Partners and Claypond Capital. Other participants in this round included Singularity AMC, Anicut Capital, 360 ONE Asset, JIF Capital, HDFC AMC, and existing backers such as Yamaha Motor, Al-Futtaim Group, and Mitsui. Aravind Mani, Co-Founder and CEO of River, emphasized the significance of this funding in scaling the company's operations.

Expanding Production and New Models

River plans to utilize the funds primarily to scale up its production capabilities. The company has made significant strides in manufacturing, increasing its daily production from 20 to 300 vehicles. "This is the steepest learning curve for any company out there," Mani stated, highlighting the challenges and achievements in scaling production.

Market Position

Founded in 2021, River has positioned itself in India's burgeoning electric two-wheeler market, competing with both new entrants like Ather Energy and Ola Electric, as well as established manufacturers such as Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor. The Indie model, launched in 2023, has been a key player in River's strategy, focusing on utility rather than competing across multiple consumer segments. The startup has sold over 50,000 units and operates through more than 75 stores across India.

Future Plans

With this new investment, River aims to further solidify its presence in the electric vehicle market by expanding its product line and increasing its manufacturing output. The company is set to explore new models that will cater to different consumer needs, aiming to capture a larger market share in the rapidly growing Indian EV sector.

This funding marks a significant milestone for River as it continues to grow and innovate in the electric vehicle industry.
