Ramona Optics Secures $25 Million in Series A Funding

Ramona Optics, a Durham, North Carolina-based company specializing in high-speed live-cell and small-organism imaging systems, has successfully raised $25 million in a Series A funding round. The round was led by ARCH Venture Partners, with participation from Stealthpoint Ventures, ND Capital, Fall Line Capital, Hamamatsu Ventures, Murchison Capital Partners, and Overlap Holdings.

Innovative Imaging Technology

Ramona Optics is known for its development of Multi-Camera Array Microscopy (MCAM) technology, which utilizes multiple imaging sensors and computational optics to capture high-resolution images over large areas simultaneously. This technology addresses the common limitation in conventional microscopy where researchers must often choose between a broad field of view and high image resolution.

The company has introduced two commercial systems: Vireo, which is designed for cellular models, and Kestrel, aimed at small model organisms. Both systems incorporate AI-powered analysis to efficiently process and interpret large volumes of biological imaging data.

Strategic Use of Funds

The newly acquired capital will be directed towards expanding Ramona Optics' commercial operations, advancing its proprietary microscopy technology, and developing additional capabilities for biomedical research and drug discovery. The company aims to increase its adoption among academic and pharmaceutical customers and develop new assays for its microscopy platforms.

Leadership and Vision

Ramona Optics was co-founded by Gregor Horstmeyer, who serves as the CEO, and Mark Harfouche. Gregor Horstmeyer stated: "This funding will enable us to further our mission of providing cutting-edge imaging solutions that support critical research in life sciences."

Future Developments

With a robust portfolio backed by 29 patents and a team of 12 PhDs specializing in areas such as computational imaging and machine learning, Ramona Optics is well-positioned to make significant strides in the field of biomedical imaging. The company continues to pave the way for advancements in drug discovery and disease research through its innovative imaging technologies.
