Quercus Biosolutions, an emerging player in agricultural biotechnology, has successfully closed a $5 million seed funding round. Founders and Vision
Founded in 2024 by Jonathan Lightner and Matt Crisp, Quercus Biosolutions is focused on leveraging AI to design novel crop protection products. Lightner, who serves as CEO, highlighted the necessity for new solutions as traditional chemical herbicides face increasing resistance. "Growers are facing steady resistance pressure across the tools they depend on, and they need new modes of action to stay ahead of it," Lightner noted.
Innovative Approach to Crop Protection
Quercus Biosolutions is pioneering the use of AI to design proteins that target specific biological mechanisms in weeds and pests. These designer proteins offer a new method of action by binding to biological targets in a way that traditional chemical herbicides cannot, potentially overcoming evolved resistance. "At an existing site of action that has a chemical inhibitor where there is evolved chemical resistance, if we inhibit that enzyme differently by our protein-protein interaction, then that evolved chemical resistance won’t confer resistance to our approach," Lightner explained.
Strategic Use of Funds
The newly acquired capital will be utilized to expand Quercus' ongoing research and development efforts, particularly focusing on field trials for their five active programs. These trials aim to validate the efficacy of their AI-designed proteins in controlling multiple weed problems in agricultural settings.
