Photoncycle Lands €15 Million to Scale Solar Energy Storage
Photoncycle, an Oslo-based climate-tech startup specializing in year-round solar energy systems for heating and electricity, has successfully raised €15 million in a Series A funding round. The investment is aimed at scaling the company’s innovative seasonal energy storage solutions across Europe.
Investment Details
The funding round was led by NordicNinja and Voima Ventures, with additional participation from Lifeline Ventures, Eviny Ventures, Luminar Ventures, and Momentum. This financial boost will enable Photoncycle to advance its mission of storing surplus solar energy generated in the summer for use during the winter months, a solution that promises to reduce energy costs and dependency on fossil fuels.
Strategic Use of Funds
Photoncycle plans to utilize the funds to begin commercial rollouts in Denmark and the Netherlands. The funding will also support the initial phase of an industrialization plan, which includes the development of a manufacturing facility capable of storing 1.4 TWh of energy annually—sufficient for approximately 140,000 homes.
Business Model and Future Plans
Photoncycle intends to offer its energy storage systems through a subscription model, which will include rooftop solar panels and 10,000 kWh of seasonal energy storage, along with full servicing. The company sees potential to expand similar storage solutions to markets in Asia and the United States.
Leadership Perspective
Bjorn Brandtzaeg, Founder and CEO of Photoncycle, emphasized the importance of seasonal energy storage in addressing Europe's renewable energy challenges. "Europe is beginning to solve short-duration storage. The remaining gap is seasonal," he remarked, highlighting the role of their technology in reducing reliance on imported fuels and protecting consumers from energy price volatility.
Investor Insights
Tomosaku Sohara, co-founder and general partner at NordicNinja, expressed confidence in Photoncycle's potential to strengthen energy sovereignty across Europe and Asia. "Photoncycle combines deep technical innovation with a clear, scalable path to global deployment," Sohara stated.
Inka Mero, founder and managing partner at Voima Ventures, commented on the systemic necessity of seasonal storage solutions as renewable energy becomes more prevalent. "Photoncycle addresses this imbalance by enabling households to store energy across seasons," Mero noted.
With this substantial investment, Photoncycle is poised to make significant strides in the renewable energy sector, contributing to a more resilient and sustainable energy future for Europe and beyond.
