Origin Raises $20 Million in Series A Funding
Origin, a San Francisco-based company developing general-purpose robots for the construction industry, has secured $20 million in Series A funding. The round was co-led by Accel and Zacua Ventures, with participation from Unilazer Ventures, Schema Ventures, Z21, and notable angel investors from companies like Anduril, Skild AI, 1X, and Tesla.
Expanding Robotic Capabilities
Origin, founded by Yogesh Ghaturle, Ashish Daga, and Tushar Makkar, is focusing on deploying and expanding its fleet of OG-1 robots. These robots are designed to perform various interior construction tasks, initially focusing on wall finishing activities such as applying compound, sanding, and priming. The OG-1 operates on a three-wheeled platform with a 360-degree view and is equipped with real-time force control for tasks like sanding. The platform's modularity allows it to support a range of additional construction trades over time.
Strategic Use of Funds
The newly acquired funds will be used to expand Origin's robotics platform and conduct large-scale customer pilots in the U.S. and Europe. The company is already working with major drywall finishing contractors in the United States and plans to initiate additional pilots in countries like Germany, Sweden, France, and Saudi Arabia.
Targeting Industry Challenges
Origin aims to address common industry challenges, such as project backlogs and labor shortages, by providing a solution that enhances efficiency on construction sites. The OG-1 robots are reported to perform tasks at triple the speed of human workers, offering a significant productivity boost for construction companies.
"The construction industry is facing unprecedented challenges with labor shortages and increasing project demands," said Yogesh Ghaturle, Co-Founder and CEO of Origin. "Our robotic solutions are designed to work collaboratively with construction teams, enhancing productivity and precision."
Future Prospects
With the backing of prominent investors and a clear strategy for expansion, Origin is well-positioned to make a significant impact in the construction sector. The company continues to innovate within its robotics platform, aiming to further integrate its technology into various construction trades and settings.
