Orbital, a Los Angeles-based startup, has announced a $5 million pre-seed funding round led by a16z speedrun. The company is pioneering the development of AI compute infrastructure located in space, leveraging the unlimited solar power and cooling benefits of the cosmos. With its first launch planned for 2027, Orbital aims to build data centers in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) that can support the energy-intensive demands of artificial intelligence.

Investment Details

The funding round includes participation from a diverse group of investors such as Basis Set, Human Element, Wayfinder, Antler, Anti Fund, Ascent, Rubik, Zero Knowledge Ventures, LYVC, Feld Ventures, New Legacy, FNDR, UpHonest, and Asterisk. This oversubscribed round reflects strong investor confidence in Orbital's vision to address the growing energy requirements of AI through innovative space-based solutions.

Strategic Use of Funds

The $5 million raised will be directed towards crucial milestones for Orbital. The funds will primarily support the 2027 Pathfinder mission, an in-orbit technology demonstration that will pave the way for future developments. Additionally, the financing will aid in the creation of Orbital-1, the first satellite specifically designed for AI computation in space.

Orbital also plans to establish Factory-1, its manufacturing facility in Los Angeles, to transition from technology validation to scaled manufacturing and deployment of its satellite constellation.
