NorthStar's $40 Million Funding Round
NorthStar, a space tech company headquartered in Montréal, Quebec, has secured $40 million in a funding round dated June 17, 2026. The round, which remains undisclosed in terms of specific investors, aims to bolster NorthStar's capabilities in Earth observation and space object tracking. The company is known for providing high-precision information products that aid in monitoring and managing space objects.
Partnership with Canada's Air Force
This funding round coincides with a new agreement with the Royal Canadian Air Force’s 3 Canadian Space Division (3 CSD). NorthStar will supply the division with advanced surveillance capabilities, utilizing a network of space sensors to track objects in orbit. This partnership, valued at over $40 million CAD over 12 months, is designed to enhance Canada's ability to detect and differentiate potential threats in space.
RCAF brigadier-general Christopher Horner emphasized the importance of this collaboration, noting that NorthStar's technology provides a "decisional advantage in both peacetime and conflict."
Strategic Plans and Future Prospects
NorthStar, founded in 2015, is preparing for a public offering this fall on the New York Stock Exchange through a merger with Viking Acquisition Corp., a special purpose acquisition company. This move is expected to value NorthStar at approximately $300 million USD. CEO Stewart Bain has previously remarked that going public will enable NorthStar to access capital necessary for scaling its operations.
Use of Funds
The newly acquired funds are anticipated to support NorthStar's ongoing development of satellite technology for space debris monitoring. This initiative aligns with Canada's broader strategy to secure its sovereignty in space, especially as the country places greater emphasis on defense-related space activities.
Leadership and Vision
NorthStar is led by CEO Stewart Bain, who has been instrumental in guiding the company through its various strategic initiatives. Ahmad Hassan, noted for his enthusiasm in building micro-apps and websites, serves as a Communications Officer at NorthStar, contributing to the company's innovative culture.
As NorthStar continues to expand its capabilities and partnerships, it remains a key player in the growing field of space technology, particularly in the realm of defense and space object surveillance.
