Malama Health Raises $9.2 Million in Seed Funding
Malama Health, a San Francisco-based company, has announced the successful completion of a $9.2 million seed funding round. The company, co-founded by Mika Eddy (CEO) and Orlando Li (CTO), provides holistic maternal support through board-certified practitioners, birth and postpartum doulas, and maternity navigators, all covered by insurance.
Investors and Funding Details
The seed funding round was led by Acumen America, with additional participation from Wisdom Ventures, Capital F, and Coyote Ventures. This financial boost is aimed at scaling Malama Health's unique maternal care model, which integrates doula services with traditional healthcare systems, specifically targeting Medicaid patients.
Expansion of Doula-Led Maternal Care
Malama Health's model addresses significant gaps in maternal healthcare, particularly for women with high-risk pregnancies insured by Medicaid. These patients represent over 40% of births in the United States. The company seeks to provide continuous care beyond traditional brief medical appointments, offering comprehensive support throughout pregnancy and the postpartum period.
The company's approach includes Doula-Care Navigators who engage with patients directly, attend births, conduct home visits, and provide ongoing support during the postpartum year. This model also features real-time health monitoring, allowing for timely escalation of clinical risks such as high blood pressure or postpartum depression to healthcare professionals.
Use of Funds
The newly acquired funds will be primarily used to expand Malama Health's services across the United States. The focus will be on integrating their doula-led care model with existing Medicaid markets, enhancing their technological infrastructure, and providing bilingual support and educational content. A significant portion of the funding is also allocated towards addressing postpartum care, particularly for conditions like gestational diabetes, which poses long-term health risks if not properly managed.
Founders' Vision
Mika Eddy, Co-Founder and CEO, emphasized the importance of continuous maternal care, stating: "Our mission is to bridge the gap in maternal healthcare by ensuring that women have the support they need throughout their pregnancy and postpartum journey."
Future Prospects
With this latest funding, Malama Health is well-positioned to expand its impact nationwide, offering a more integrated and supportive maternal care experience for Medicaid patients. The company's innovative approach aims to set a new standard in maternal healthcare, ensuring better outcomes for mothers and their children.
