Lilac Agriculture Raises $2.3 Million in Seed Round
Lilac Agriculture, based in Wheatland, North Dakota, has successfully raised $2.3 million in a seed funding round. This round was led by Innova, with participation from 701 Fund, Ag Ventures Alliance, Evergreen Climate Innovations, North Dakota Development Fund, Pathway Ventures, and Tall Grass Ventures. The company specializes in developing advanced rhizobium inoculants designed to enhance nodule competitiveness and nitrogen fixation, outperforming existing strains in agricultural fields.
Background and Purpose
The company, co-founded by Barney Geddes, who also serves as Chief Scientific Officer, and led by CEO Natalie Dinicola, aims to address the 'black box' issue of rhizobial inoculants in agriculture. According to Dinicola, the challenge lies in ensuring that the inoculants effectively colonize target crops, as native soil bacteria often outcompete them. "The black-box claims in this category always frustrated me," Dinicola said, highlighting the uncertainty farmers face regarding the efficacy of commercial inoculants.
Strategic Use of Funds
The newly acquired funds will be utilized to advance Lilac Agriculture's platform, which is designed to optimize both nitrogen-fixing efficiency and competitiveness of their inoculants. The company plans to screen a diversity of strains from North Dakota State University's collection, assessing nitrogen fixation under controlled conditions and using molecular markers to determine strain competitiveness.
Looking Ahead
With the backing of prominent investors and a focus on innovative solutions for agriculture, Lilac Agriculture is positioned to make significant strides in improving crop yields through enhanced rhizobium inoculants.
