Light Raises $46 Million in Series A Funding
Light, an energy startup based in Houston, Texas, has successfully raised $46 million in a Series A funding round. The round was led by Matrix, with participation from Activate Capital, Spark Capital, Mischief, Gigascale Capital, MCJ, and BoxGroup. Founded by Adam Compain and Baker Shogry, Light aims to simplify how businesses manage and offer electricity by handling risk, regulatory compliance, payments, and customer support.
Innovating Electricity as a Service
Light is pioneering a new model in the energy sector by allowing businesses to embed electricity services directly into their products. Similar to how fintech companies like Plaid have enabled businesses to integrate financial services, Light provides the infrastructure to incorporate electricity offerings. This could benefit various industries, enabling property companies to offer electricity plans during tenant onboarding and allowing electric vehicle companies to bundle charging services with vehicle subscriptions.
Baker Shogry, Light's co-founder and CEO, highlighted the transformative potential of this model by stating: "Every decade has produced a new infrastructure layer that changed how companies build products and serve customers, from software to embedded financial services. Electricity is the next frontier."
Usage of Funds
The substantial funding will be utilized to expand Light's technological capabilities and broaden its market reach. This includes enhancing its API, which allows businesses to launch branded electricity plans swiftly. The company aims to continue removing barriers for businesses to offer electricity services seamlessly, similar to other embedded services like payments and financing.
Light's Operational Model
Light's operational framework involves managing the backend processes such as state licensing, wholesale electricity procurement, billing, customer support, commodity risk, and grid integration. By doing so, Light enables companies to offer tailored electricity services without the need to navigate complex regulatory and operational hurdles.
This funding round marks a significant milestone for Light as it continues to develop its innovative energy solutions. With the backing of prominent investors, the company is well-positioned to redefine how electricity is offered and consumed in various sectors.
