Kelluu Raises €15 Million in Series A Funding
Kelluu, a Finnish startup specializing in autonomous airships for aerial data collection, has successfully raised €15 million in a Series A funding round. The funding was led by the NATO Innovation Fund, marking its first investment in a Finnish company, with additional participation from Keen Venture Partners, Gungnir Capital, and Tesi.
Company Overview
Kelluu is known for operating the world’s largest fleet of autonomous airships, designed to deliver precise aerial data. These airships are a cost-efficient, autonomous, and silent platform that supports mission-critical decisions at scale. By providing persistent intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), Kelluu's technology aims to address gaps in existing monitoring systems.
Leadership and Vision
The company is led by CEO Janne Hietala, who has nearly two decades of experience in entrepreneurship, notably from his time at Valamis Group. Co-founder and Head of Sales Jiri Jormakka also plays a crucial role in driving the company's sales strategy.
Strategic Use of Funds
The newly acquired funding will be directed towards scaling Kelluu's fleet and enhancing its sensing platform. This includes integrating advanced sensor technologies and expanding into new international markets. The company aims to bolster its capability to provide continuous monitoring without the need for customers to build or manage their own infrastructure.
Addressing Emerging Threats
Kelluu's airships are particularly focused on low-altitude surveillance, which is becoming increasingly important in Arctic and northern European regions. These areas face challenges due to limited traditional monitoring systems, and Kelluu’s technology offers a solution for real-time visibility and response capabilities. The airships can remain airborne for more than 12 hours, even in harsh weather conditions, and five of these can monitor an area as large as 30,000 square kilometers from a single base.
Market and Investment Context
As European governments increase defense spending, particularly on technologies that secure NATO’s eastern flank and Arctic regions, Kelluu's investment aligns with these growing needs. The company's platform not only serves defense purposes but also has civilian applications, such as wildfire detection and infrastructure monitoring.
Keen Venture Partners' Giuseppe Lacerenza noted, "The gap between what needs to be watched and what existing platforms can actually watch is widening." This investment reflects the increasing focus across NATO and allied countries on strengthening airspace security and developing autonomous systems capable of adapting to evolving threats.
Kelluu's innovative approach to autonomous airship surveillance positions it well to meet the demands of modern airspace dynamics, offering a scalable and adaptable solution for both defense and civilian sectors.
