Isar Aerospace Raises €270 Million for Expansion

Isar Aerospace, a Munich-based space company, has announced a successful Series D funding round, raising €270 million. The investment was led by Island Green Capital and Molten Ventures, with participation from HV Capital, Lakestar, and UVC Partners. Founded in 2018, Isar Aerospace aims to facilitate access to space, contributing to technological and economic development globally.

Strategic Growth Plans

The fresh capital injection will support Isar Aerospace in scaling its operations and boosting production of its Spectrum launch vehicle. The company plans to expand its manufacturing capabilities at a new facility near Munich, which is expected to produce up to 40 launch vehicles annually. Additionally, Isar Aerospace is broadening its launch infrastructure, having signed a letter of intent with Maritime Launch Services to develop a second launch site in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Demand for Launch Services

The demand for independent launch services is on the rise, driven mainly by government and defense customers. Currently, defense-related business constitutes around 60% of Isar Aerospace’s demand. The company is positioning itself as a key player in providing launch services to European governments, NATO members, and allied nations, amidst Europe’s reliance on foreign launch providers.

Leadership and Vision

The leadership team at Isar Aerospace includes Co-Founder and CEO Daniel Metzler, CTO and Co-Founder Josef Fleischmann, and CEO Rune Stave. Metzler commented on the recent test flight of the Spectrum vehicle from Norway's Andøya Spaceport, stating it was a "great success" despite not reaching orbit, as it served as a critical test of the company's systems.

Europe's Space Ambitions

The funding round comes as Europe seeks to enhance its sovereign space capabilities amid increasing geopolitical tensions. In 2025, fewer than 10 orbital launches were conducted from Europe, compared to over 190 in the United States, highlighting the need for increased European launch capacity.

Isar Aerospace’s latest funding round marks a significant step in its mission to provide independent access to space, supporting both commercial and defense sectors.
