Healthleap Raises $38 Million for AI-Driven Hospital Screening
Healthleap, a South African startup focused on improving patient care in hospitals, has successfully raised $38 million in seed and Series A funding. The investment round was led by Hummingbird Ventures, with participation from Sequoia Capital and First Round Capital.
Healthleap specializes in using artificial intelligence to enhance hospital operations by identifying inpatients who are at risk of malnutrition. The company's platform integrates with electronic health records (EHR) to provide daily AI screening and nutrition-risk scores, helping hospital teams to take timely action.
Founders and Background
Founded in 2022 by siblings Jemima and Josiah Meyer, Healthleap initially focused on a clinical nutrition tool developed by Jemima for dietitians. Over time, the company expanded its offerings to include a broader AI platform designed to identify hospital patients who might be suffering from conditions that often go undetected, such as malnutrition or delirium.
"A patient's chart holds two kinds of data. Labs, weights, and vital signs sit in structured fields, but the most telling signs sit in clinicians' written notes: poor appetite, recent weight loss, muscle loss, trouble swallowing," said Josiah Meyer, co-founder and CEO.
Deployment and Reach
Currently, Healthleap's platform is operational in over 50 hospitals. It screens for various conditions, including malnutrition and delirium, and the company is developing programs to identify other health risks like aspiration pneumonia and pressure ulcers.
Use of Funds
The newly acquired funds will be directed towards expanding the platform's capabilities and increasing its deployment in more healthcare facilities. The company also plans to enhance its technology to better analyze clinical notes and data from EHRs, providing more accurate and timely assessments.
Investor Insights
The investment from Hummingbird Ventures, along with Sequoia Capital and First Round Capital, underscores the growing interest in AI applications within the healthcare industry. These investors are banking on Healthleap's potential to make a significant impact in hospital settings by improving patient outcomes and reducing the risk of undiagnosed conditions.
As Healthleap continues to refine its technology, it aims to provide healthcare professionals with better tools to manage patient care effectively and efficiently.
