H2SITE Secures €3.4 Million Funding

H2SITE, a company specializing in the sustainable transport of hydrogen by converting it to high purity prior to use, has announced that it secured €3.4 million in funding. The funding round, which remains undisclosed in terms of series, was led by Enova, with participation from investors including Equinor, Höegh Autoliners, Breeze Ship Design, Sustainable Energy Catapult Centre, Alltec, and Maritime CleanTech.

Location and Purpose

Based in Camino Gogorrena, Loiu, Spain, H2SITE is focused on developing technologies that facilitate the transport and conversion of hydrogen. The latest funding will support the HydraNord Power project, which aims to develop and validate a commercial-scale onboard ammonia-to-power system for maritime applications.

Project Details

The HydraNord Power project will enable the conversion of ammonia into high-purity hydrogen directly onboard vessels. This system is designed to produce up to one tonne of hydrogen per day, supplying maritime fuel cells with 700 kW of net electrical power. The compact and modular architecture of H2SITE's membrane reactor integrates ammonia cracking and hydrogen separation within a single process. This approach not only produces fuel-cell-grade hydrogen but also protects fuel cells from ammonia contamination.

Collaboration and Testing

The project is a collaborative effort involving several partners, including Equinor, Höegh Autoliners, and others. The complete system is set to be installed and tested at Energy House in Stord, Norway, under conditions that simulate commercial maritime operations. Development and integration are scheduled for 2027, with commissioning planned for early 2028.

Market Implications

HydraNord Power is initially targeted at auxiliary and hybrid power applications in deep-sea shipping, offshore operations, and other energy-intensive maritime segments. The system's design allows for both newbuild and retrofit projects, capable of being scaled into larger installations as needed.
