Groundhawk Secures €2 Million for Infrastructure Mapping

Groundhawk, a Finland-based company specializing in underground cable mapping and real-time as-built documentation, has successfully raised €2 million in a seed funding round. The round was led by Greencode Ventures, with additional participation from 2C Ventures. This funding aims to transform how underground utilities are mapped and documented, with a focus on expanding Groundhawk’s market presence across Europe.

Innovative Approach to Underground Mapping

Groundhawk offers a cutting-edge solution that allows for precise and real-time mapping of open trenches. This approach replaces traditional, often inaccurate, survey methods with real-time, AI-powered data capture. Utilizing high-precision satellite positioning and 3D scanning technology, Groundhawk's platform enables construction crews to document underground installations with centimetre-level accuracy while trenches are still open. This data is instantly synchronized to the cloud, providing a reliable digital record that can be accessed in real-time.

Christoffer Winquist, Co-Founder of Groundhawk, emphasized the importance of this innovation: "Our technology enables a level of accuracy in underground mapping that has not been achievable before, dramatically reducing the risk of costly errors."

Strategic Use of Funds

The newly acquired capital will be strategically employed to expand Groundhawk’s operations across key European markets, including Germany, the UK, Benelux, and the Nordic countries. The company plans to develop a scalable B2B sales organization and expand its engineering team. Additionally, the funds will be used to enhance product capabilities, particularly focusing on planning tools and pre-construction workflows.

Addressing Industry Challenges

The need for accurate underground infrastructure mapping is underscored by industry estimates indicating that inaccuracies in this area contribute to over €100 billion in global damages annually. By embedding quality assurance directly into the construction workflow, Groundhawk's platform aims to mitigate these risks. The technology allows teams to record installation details and verify correct installations before sites are closed, thus preventing costly project delays and safety risks.

Groundhawk is currently serving a range of network owners, contractors, and subcontractors involved in projects for fibre and electricity infrastructure. Notable customers include Nordic and European contractors such as Eltel Networks, Voimatel, and Elvera.

Looking Ahead

With the new funding, Groundhawk is well-positioned to establish itself as a standard platform for infrastructure data capture and quality management across Europe. The company also has plans to expand beyond Europe in 2027, reflecting its ambition to set a new benchmark in underground infrastructure mapping worldwide.

This seed funding round marks a significant step for Groundhawk in its mission to modernize and improve the accuracy of underground utility documentation, potentially reshaping the landscape of infrastructure management in Europe.
