Great Sky Secures $14 Million in Seed Funding

Great Sky, a company from Boulder, Colorado, has successfully raised $14 million in a seed funding round. The round was led by Bison Ventures, with additional investments from Matchstick Ventures and Range Ventures. Great Sky is focused on developing a unique computing platform for artificial intelligence, inspired by the human brain.

Innovative AI Computing Platform

Great Sky's technology aims to break away from the limitations of current AI infrastructure, which predominantly relies on transformers and GPUs. The company has introduced a new architecture called Superconducting Optoelectronic Networks (SOENs). This system integrates superconducting circuits operating at cryogenic temperatures with optical links capable of transmitting extremely low-energy signals. By doing so, it mimics the structure and function of biological neural networks, allowing for more efficient processing and memory integration.

The company's architecture supports high-throughput, low-latency tasks such as real-time video analysis and spoken language processing. Remarkably, the system can process over 60 million video frames per second, surpassing the capabilities of conventional GPU-based systems.

Leadership and Vision

The founding team of Great Sky includes Jeffrey Shainline as CEO, Jeffrey Chiles as CTO, and Bryce Primavera as VP of Architecture. Together, they bring a wealth of experience, having developed the underlying technology through more than a decade of research at the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Shainline remarked: "Our goal is to create AI systems that can learn and adapt in real-time, much like the human brain."

Strategic Use of Funds

The $14 million raised in this seed round will be pivotal in advancing Great Skyโ€™s development of large-scale AI systems. The company plans to connect wafer-scale neural networks using advanced fiber-optic interconnections, potentially enabling systems with more neurons and synapses than ever before.

With this funding, Great Sky is positioned to further develop its groundbreaking technology, potentially transforming the landscape of AI computing. The companyโ€™s focus on integrating superconducting and optical technologies positions it as a promising player in the field of artificial intelligence.
