Elle MD Technologies Raises $1.1 Million in Pre-Seed Funding

Elle MD Technologies, a healthtech startup based in New Minas, Nova Scotia, has successfully raised $1.1 million in a pre-seed funding round. The funds will support the development of the Livv Ring, a once-monthly, hormone-free vaginal contraceptive designed for modern women. This innovative product aims to provide a user-controlled and science-backed alternative to conventional contraceptives.

Key Investors and Funding Details

The pre-seed round was led by Elizabeth Edwards of H Venture Partners. Other notable investors include Dr. Robin Leblanc, Invest Nova Scotia, the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation, the Community Business Development Corporation at Hants-Kings, Queen’s University Tricolour Venture Fund, Spring Invest Together, and Startup TNT.

The Drive Behind Elle MD

Elle MD was founded by Jennifer Johnston, a family physician who has firsthand experience with the limitations of current birth control options. "I wanted something better for my patients, and better for me," Johnston explained, reflecting on her motivation to create a non-hormonal contraceptive solution.

The Livv Ring is designed to address common issues associated with traditional contraceptives, such as the side effects of hormonal methods and the discomfort of IUDs. The device combines silicone and copper to offer an alternative that avoids many of these drawbacks.

Planned Use of Funds

The newly secured funding will primarily be used to advance clinical trials at Ottawa Hospital, which are scheduled to begin in the fall. These trials are a crucial step in bringing the Livv Ring to market, enabling the company to validate its safety and efficacy.

Addressing a Market Need

The development of the Livv Ring is driven by a clear demand for more diverse contraceptive options. Many women experience adverse effects from hormonal contraceptives or have health issues that make these options unsuitable. Elle MD aims to fill this gap with a product that offers effective birth control without the hormonal side effects.

Future Outlook

With this funding, Elle MD is well-positioned to advance its clinical testing and move closer to offering a new contraceptive choice for women. The company's approach reflects a growing trend in healthtech to personalize and improve reproductive health solutions.
