Elea & Lili Raises €2.5 Million in Seed Funding

Elea & Lili, a biomaterials startup innovating in the field of sustainable absorbent materials, has successfully raised €2.5 million in a seed funding round. The round was led by Lifeline Ventures, with additional investments from Ikorni Invest Oy Ab and Baltiska Handels Sverige AB. The company, based at the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, is spearheaded by Founder and CEO Tatu Miettinen, alongside Co-founder and CTO Miika Nikinmaa.

Focus on Sustainable Alternatives

Elea & Lili is developing a cellulose-based superabsorbent material known as CSA™, designed to replace petroleum-based superabsorbent polymers (SAP) used in various applications, including hygiene products and agriculture. This innovation aims to offer a biodegradable and microplastic-free alternative to the conventional materials that contribute significantly to environmental pollution.

"Hygiene and agriculture are equally strategic entry points for us," noted CEO Tatu Miettinen. "In both markets, absorbent materials are mission-critical components, and today they are fossil-based. We are replacing them with a scalable biomaterial."

Strategic Use of Funds

The newly acquired capital will be utilized to support several key initiatives:

  • Pilot Production: Establishing pilot production facilities to refine and scale the manufacturing process of CSA™.
  • Industrial Partnerships: Building partnerships with established cellulose and biomaterials companies to facilitate industrial-level production.
  • Regulatory Validation: Ensuring compliance with upcoming regulatory changes in the European Union that will restrict the use of persistent fossil-based plastics in soil by 2028.
  • Commercial Launches: Preparing for initial commercial launches in the United States and Europe, focusing on disposable diapers and agricultural applications.
  • Team Expansion: Recruiting additional talent to support these expanding operations.

Addressing Environmental Challenges

Elea & Lili's CSA™ material is designed to match the performance of existing fossil-based absorbents while remaining compatible with current manufacturing processes. The company aims to tackle significant environmental issues, such as the nearly 40 million tons of waste generated annually by disposable diapers and the persistent plastic contamination in agriculture.

By focusing on these large global markets, Elea & Lili is positioning itself to meet the growing demand for sustainable alternatives. The company's efforts align with broader regulatory trends and consumer preferences towards environmentally friendly products.

Looking Ahead

With this seed funding, Elea & Lili is set to accelerate its efforts in commercializing CSA™ and expanding its presence in key international markets. The support from Lifeline Ventures and other investors underscores the potential impact of their innovative solutions in the realm of sustainable materials.
