CuspAI Raises $450 Million in Series B Funding
CuspAI, a Cambridge-based startup specializing in artificial intelligence for materials discovery, has announced a successful $450 million Series B funding round. The round was co-led by Kleiner Perkins and New Enterprise Associates (NEA), with significant participation from Bezos Expeditions, the investment firm of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

In addition to Kleiner Perkins and NEA, the round saw participation from a diverse group of investors. These include Glade Brook Capital Partners, Lux Capital, AMD Ventures, Tru Arrow Partners, StepStone, Sovereign AI Fund, Temasek, Basis Set Ventures, Giant Ventures, Phoenix Court, and Northzone. This broad support underscores the growing interest in AI-driven materials innovation.
Company Leadership
CuspAI was co-founded by Chad Edwards, who serves as CEO, and Max Welling, the Chief Technology Officer. Edwards expressed his enthusiasm about the funding, noting, "This investment will allow us to push the boundaries of materials science through AI." Welling added, "Our platform is designed to revolutionize how materials are discovered and developed."
Strategic Use of Funds
The newly raised capital will be directed towards expanding CuspAI's operations across key global markets, including the United States, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region. The company plans to open a new office in Singapore and grow its teams in Cambridge, Amsterdam, Berlin, Tokyo, and the U.S.
Launch of AI Materials Foundry
Alongside the funding announcement, CuspAI has launched the AI Materials Foundry, a global collaboration network aimed at advancing materials discovery. The initiative connects data, computing infrastructure, laboratories, and scientific expertise, with over 45 founding partners. Notable participants include NVIDIA, Meta, Samsung, Hyundai Motor Group, and the Henry Royce Institute, the U.K.'s national institute for advanced materials research.
Focus on Materials Challenges
CuspAI's MIRA platform utilizes generative and agentic AI to design materials with specific properties. The company is targeting materials challenges in sectors such as semiconductors, clean energy, and advanced manufacturing. By improving materials development processes, CuspAI aims to help industries enhance performance, optimize production, and reduce reliance on scarce resources.
