Cotierra Raises $3 Million for Biochar Technology Expansion

Cotierra, a Zurich-based climate tech startup, has successfully raised $3 million in a recent funding round. The investment was co-led by PINC, the venture arm of Paulig, and Carbon Removal Partners. Cotierra is focused on developing decentralized biochar systems that convert agricultural residues into biochar, a process that could significantly aid farmers and contribute to climate change mitigation.

Investment Details

The funding round, which was undisclosed in nature, also saw participation from a diverse group of investors. These included Zürcher Kantonalbank, Carbon Drawdown Initiative, better ventures, GOTA Ventures, Hungry4Impact, Triple Impact Ventures, and several climate and impact-focused angel investors.

Company Background

Cotierra was founded in 2023 by Thomas Kaeslin, Marcel Rohner, and Lorenz Buser. The company's technology involves the use of decentralized reactors that process agricultural waste into biochar close to where the biomass is generated. This approach addresses issues such as agricultural waste management and declining soil health.

The company initially applied its technology in the coffee value chain and is now transitioning from pilot projects to larger, multi-year commercial deployments. "We have shown that decentralised biochar offers a highly effective pathway to decarbonise and strengthen tropical agricultural value chains," said Thomas Kaeslin, CEO and Co-Founder of Cotierra.

Use of Funds

With the new capital, Cotierra plans to industrialize its reactor technology and expand its digital platform. The company aims to broaden its scope to include other tropical commodities such as cocoa, cotton, and citrus. This expansion will facilitate the scaling of their technology to meet the needs of a wider range of agricultural sectors.

Looking Ahead

Cotierra's efforts to integrate biochar technology into tropical agricultural practices could offer significant benefits in terms of both productivity and environmental impact. The company's focus on making its solutions scalable and reliable positions it well to address the challenges faced by agricultural companies in reducing emissions and enhancing carbon removal across their supply chains.
