CarbonStrong Raises $1.43 Million in Seed Funding

Bengaluru-based climatetech startup CarbonStrong has successfully raised $1.43 million (Rs 12.5 crore) in a seed funding round. The company focuses on developing low-carbon cement substitutes from industrial waste, aiming to reduce the carbon footprint in the construction industry. The funding round was led by IAN Angel Fund, with participation from investors such as Rainmatter, Social Alpha, Spectrum Impact, and Full Circle Ventures.

Company Background

CarbonStrong, founded in 2022, specializes in producing low-carbon binders by upcycling industrial waste materials from sectors like coal and steel. These binders are designed to replace up to 50% of traditional cement in concrete, thereby cutting costs and reducing carbon emissions without altering existing production processes.

Use of Funds

The newly acquired funds will be directed towards setting up CarbonStrong's first production facility, expanding their team, and furthering product development and testing. The company also plans to transition from customer trials to commercial-scale production. CarbonStrong aims to achieve a production capacity of up to 100,000 tonnes per year over the next two years.

Leadership Insight

Co-founder Vikramaditya Singh highlighted the importance of this funding in scaling their technology. "India will build most of its future in the next 25-30 years. We want every ton of that concrete to be stronger, cost-efficient, and lower in carbon footprint," Singh stated.

Future Plans

Having conducted several successful customer trials and paid pilots, CarbonStrong is now focused on converting these early trials into long-term supply relationships with ready-mix concrete companies. This strategic move will help the company cement its position in the market as a viable alternative to traditional cement solutions.
