Bluecore Energy Raises $50 Million in Seed Round

Bluecore Energy, a company specializing in compact modular reactors designed to provide zero-emission power from a barge, has announced the successful raising of $50 million in a seed funding round. The company aims to deliver flexible energy solutions where they are most needed, particularly in locations with limited grid capacity.

Funding Details

The seed round was led by Silverton Partners and included participation from a notable group of investors such as Slauson & Co., Harlem Capital Partners, Precursor Ventures, LMNT Ventures, and several others. This influx of capital comes just a few months after the company emerged from stealth mode with an initial backing of $10 million.

Company Vision and Leadership

Founded by Kofi Asante, who also serves as the CEO, Bluecore Energy is working on developing small modular reactors (SMRs) that are mounted on floating platforms. These reactors are designed to produce around 10 megawatts of continuous power and can operate for years between refuelings. Asante explained, "The Navy is doing this as we speak, for the last 70 years, and has never had an accident. We just made it smaller so you can actually move things around in a way that doesn’t take years, but days."

Strategic Use of Funds

The company plans to use the new funds primarily to engineer, test, and license its first floating nuclear system. Efforts are already underway at the Port of Long Beach, California, where Bluecore Energy is developing a non-fueled reactor module prototype. This prototype will help validate the monitoring, sensor, and control systems necessary for the operation of these floating reactors.

Regulatory Engagement

Bluecore Energy has started formal regulatory engagement with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the U.S. Coast Guard. The two agencies have a memorandum of understanding that coordinates the requirements for the design, construction, operation, and oversight of civilian floating nuclear plants. Megan Moyette, the company’s licensing and safety lead, noted the progress as "encouraging" and highlighted the collaborative approach with these regulatory bodies.

Future Prospects

By focusing on flexible energy deployment, Bluecore Energy aims to serve ports, coastal infrastructure, and artificial intelligence data centers, with long-term plans to potentially power cargo ships. The company is positioned to contribute to cleaner energy solutions, especially in areas with constrained energy infrastructure.
