BioScout, a Sydney-based startup known for its innovative approach to agricultural disease detection, has successfully raised $4.8 million in a seed funding round. The round was co-led by Demea Sustainable Investment and Astanor, with additional backing from GrainInnovate, GrainCorp Ventures, Hort Innovation Venture Fund, Artesian, and Division Q.

BioScout is transforming the agriculture industry by providing crop growers and viticulturists with cutting-edge automated disease detection technology. The company offers an AI-powered early warning system that alerts farmers to airborne fungal pathogens before they cause visible damage to crops. This technology is likened to a "tornado or hurricane watch" but specifically for crop diseases, enabling proactive management rather than reactive.
Strategic Use of Funds
The newly secured funds will be directed towards expanding BioScout's presence in Europe and scaling its global network of sensors. The company plans to increase the number of sensors from 250 to 1,000 units by 2029. This expansion will enhance its ability to provide real-time data and improve the accuracy of its disease detection system.

The system developed by BioScout works by continuously drawing in air using a wind vane and capturing airborne particles, including fungal spores, on adhesive tape. This allows for early detection of pathogens, which is crucial since visible symptoms often appear too late to prevent significant crop damage. By identifying threats early, farmers can avoid excessive use of fungicides and reduce the risk of crop loss.
