Base Power Raises $1 Billion in Series D Funding
Base Power, an Austin-based company focused on providing affordable and reliable energy solutions, has successfully raised $1 billion in a Series D funding round. This substantial injection of capital is set to propel the company, which offers fixed low rates and automatic battery backup to homes across Texas, toward national expansion.
Investment Details
The Series D round was led by a consortium of investors including Ribbit, Addition, Valor Equity Partners, and JPMorganChase’s Strategic Investment Group. Other participating investors were Altimeter, D1 Capital Partners, Sands Capital, Coatue, Layer Global, Energy Impact Partners, Thrive Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Lightspeed, Trust Ventures, and CapitalG. This round brings Base Power's post-money valuation to $13 billion.
New Product Launch: Base Core
Coinciding with this funding announcement, Base Power has launched Base Core, a new home battery system manufactured at their Austin facility. The Base Core battery is designed to provide backup power during outages and support the broader electric grid. It is available in configurations offering 39.2 kilowatt-hours or 78.4 kilowatt-hours of storage, making it one of the most substantial residential battery systems currently available.
With the ability to be installed in under an hour and operate seamlessly during power outages, Base Core is tailored to withstand extreme weather conditions. The company is currently producing thousands of these systems each month at their Austin facility.
Strategic Use of Funds
Base Power plans to utilize the freshly raised capital to further expand its operations beyond Texas and Illinois, where it has already established a presence. The funds will also support the installation of more Base Core systems across the country and facilitate the hiring of additional employees to manage this growth.
Expanding Energy Solutions
Founded in 2023 by Zach Dell, who serves as CEO, and Justin Lopas, the COO, Base Power has been working to enhance grid resilience through distributed energy systems. "We brought together the best hardware and software engineers in the world to build Core, a battery designed to protect American homes while supporting the grid," said CEO Zach Dell.
The company's innovative approach integrates residential battery installations into a larger fleet, thereby enhancing utility capacity and grid reliability. Over the past year, Base Power has expanded its battery fleet to more than 500 megawatt-hours and has entered into partnerships with energy providers such as El Paso Electric, Austin Energy, and CoServ.
Future Expansion Plans
With the rising demand for electricity in the U.S., Base Power is positioning itself to address the need for rapid capacity expansion. The company plans to make Base Core available to more homeowners in selected areas, with ambitions for broader national expansion in the near future.
Base Power's commitment to providing reliable energy solutions is evident in its strategic growth and product development efforts, as it continues to play a significant role in enhancing energy infrastructure across the country.
