Aqua Theon Raises ¥2 Billion for Seaweed Tech Expansion
Aqua Theon, a Japanese company at the forefront of seaweed processing technology, has successfully raised ¥2 billion in a Pre-Series A funding round. The company is known for its innovative use of seaweed-derived technology in high-end products such as the "MISAKY.TOKYO" confectionery line and the "OoMee" functional beverage brand. This latest funding round saw participation from investors including Sparx Asset Management (Mirai Creation Fund III), Beyond Next Ventures, and Shizuoka Shimbun.
Seaweed-Derived Functional Beverages
Aqua Theon's flagship product, OoMee, is a functional beverage that combines soluble and insoluble dietary fibers derived from seaweed, specifically agar. Despite being low in calories, the beverage is designed to provide a feeling of fullness and support intestinal health. Recently, the company launched "OoMee Matcha," which incorporates seaweed with matcha, aiming to expand its product line.
Since its launch in May 2025, OoMee has been introduced to approximately 700 stores across the United States, including popular chains like Sprouts and Raley's. The product has maintained a high repeat purchase rate, reflecting its growing popularity.
Strategic Use of Funds
The funds from this round will be strategically invested in several key areas:
- Marketing and Sales: Strengthening marketing and sales structures to boost brand visibility and consumer engagement.
- Technology Expansion: Expanding the Seabiotics technology portfolio, which is central to Aqua Theon's production process. This platform allows for precise adjustment of agar's viscosity and texture, crucial for beverage production.
- Partnerships: Enhancing strategic partnerships with other companies to foster collaborative growth and innovation.
Expansion Plans
With the fresh capital, Aqua Theon aims to accelerate its distribution and brand establishment efforts within the United States. The company is also exploring additional applications of its seaweed processing technology, including developments in alternative plastics and medical capsules, with some technologies currently patent-pending.
Aqua Theon's innovative approach to leveraging seaweed in consumer products highlights the potential of sustainable resources in modern food and beverage industries. The company's ongoing expansion efforts in the U.S. market reflect a strategic move to tap into a growing demand for health-conscious and environmentally friendly products.
