Amber Electric Expands with €49 Million Series E Funding

Amber Electric, a Melbourne-based renewable energy retailer, has secured €49 million in a Series E funding round. The company, which provides households with direct access to wholesale electricity and automated management of home batteries and electric vehicles, aims to transform these resources into a distributed energy network. The funding round was led by Morgan Stanley Investment Management's 1GT climate private equity strategy, with additional investments from E.ON, ETF Partners, and Innovation Victoria.

Strategic Goals and Expansion Plans

Amber Electric plans to utilize this influx of capital to expand its operations both within Australia and in Europe. By leveraging its partnership with E.ON, one of the largest electricity markets outside its home country, Amber intends to enhance its presence in Europe. "This additional capital positions Amber to double down on our expansion across Europe," said Chris Thompson, co-founder and co-CEO of Amber.

Transforming Home Energy Use

Amber Electric's innovative approach allows customers to access real-time wholesale electricity prices through its SmartShift software. The system automates the charging of home batteries when renewable energy is abundant and electricity prices are low, then sells stored energy back to the grid when prices rise. This model not only maximizes the economic potential of home batteries but also contributes to a more sustainable energy infrastructure.

Lead Investor and Supporters

The lead investor for this funding round, Morgan Stanley Investment Management's 1GT climate private equity strategy, is joined by E.ON, ETF Partners, and Innovation Victoria. These investors are backing Amber Electric's vision of coordinating thousands of small energy assets to create a more resilient and flexible energy grid.

Looking Forward

With the support of these prominent investors, Amber Electric is well-positioned to further its mission of integrating renewable energy into everyday household use, promoting both economic efficiency and environmental sustainability.
