Tokyo's ai& Secures $50 Million in Seed Funding
ai&, a Tokyo-based company specializing in next-generation artificial intelligence, has raised $50 million in a seed funding round dated March 27, 2026. The company, known for its innovative AI solutions designed for global applications, was co-founded by David Bennett and Shimpei Hara. Bennett serves as the CEO, while Hara holds the position of President.
Company Vision and Background
ai& aims to build a vertically integrated AI infrastructure and services platform that caters to a worldwide market. The company is working on a comprehensive approach that combines data centers, heterogeneous computing, and advanced AI model services into a single, cohesive stack. This strategy is intended to enhance performance and reduce costs compared to traditional single-vendor solutions.
David Bennett, who previously held top executive roles at Tenstorrent and NEC Personal Computers, remarked on the company's approach: "By owning and optimizing the stack end to end โ from data centers and heterogeneous compute to models and services โ our customers get better performance, better economics, and less friction."
Use of Funds
The $50 million seed funding will accelerate the development of ai&'s infrastructure, compute capabilities, and model services. The company is also channeling resources into the expansion of its data center footprint, with over $2 billion committed to this effort. This includes the development of ten data center sites, with plans for a 100MW+ campus within the next three years. Currently, two of these facilities are operational.
Data Center and AI Lab Development
ai& is developing modular data center architecture that incorporates a heterogeneous cloud infrastructure. This setup is designed to run AI models across disaggregated systems using hardware from multiple vendors, enhancing both performance and cost-effectiveness.
Additionally, ai& plans to establish an AI lab in Japan to develop localized AI models and services. This lab will also focus on nurturing domestic AI talent, addressing the growing demand for sovereign and secure AI infrastructure in the Japanese market.
Strategic Integration and Market Expansion
The company has already taken significant steps to integrate existing infrastructures into its platform. Unsung Fields, Inc., a Japanese data center cloud company, has transitioned its infrastructure and operations to become part of ai&'s platform, ceasing its independent operations.
Looking ahead, ai& aims to demonstrate its model in Japan before expanding to other regions, including the Asia-Pacific, Europe, and the Middle East. The company also plans to launch its first U.S. data center within the next two years.
With its comprehensive, globally-focused strategy, ai& is positioning itself as a key player in the AI infrastructure space, capitalizing on the increasing enterprise demand for efficient and secure AI solutions.
