A & K Robotics Raises $8 Million in Series A Funding
Vancouver-based A & K Robotics has successfully closed an $8 million Series A funding round aimed at expanding its self-driving mobility pods for airports. The round was co-led by BDC Capital's Industrial Innovation Venture Fund and Vantage Futures, with additional participation from RiSC Capital, Grep VC, Nimbus Synergies, and Dan Gelbart.
Company Focus and Technology
A & K Robotics specializes in developing self-driving "mobility pods" known as Cruz, designed to assist travelers in navigating large and crowded indoor spaces such as airport terminals. These electric, autonomous vehicles are particularly beneficial for passengers with mobility limitations. Currently, Cruz pods are operational at Vancouver International Airport and Madrid-Barajas Airport, and the company plans to expand these deployments further.
Strategic Use of Funds
The newly acquired funds will be used to transition from pilot programs to permanent installations across North America and Europe. The company has already initiated steps to scale production, with plans to increase manufacturing capacity from dozens to hundreds of units per month. A new rapid prototyping and research and development facility has been opened, and a third production hub is set to be established in Surrey, British Columbia.
"We're scaling production, accelerating R&D, and working with leading airport operators to integrate autonomous mobility into everyday operations," said CEO Matthew Anderson. "The focus is turning proven technology into real infrastructure at scale."
Investor Participation
The Series A round was notably supported by a diverse group of investors. BDC Capital's Industrial Innovation Venture Fund and New York-based Vantage Futures led the investment, emphasizing their interest in innovative solutions for transportation infrastructure. Additional contributions came from Toronto-based RiSC Capital, Silicon Valley's Grep VC, Vancouver-based Nimbus Synergies, and Dan Gelbart, co-founder of Creo and Kardium.
Future Plans
With the new funding, A & K Robotics is poised to enhance its presence in the airport mobility sector significantly. The company aims to solidify its technology as a staple in airport operations, addressing the growing demand for efficient and accessible mobility solutions as the global population ages.
