Nura Bio Raises $73.8 Million in Series B Funding
Nura Bio, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company based in South San Francisco, California, has successfully closed a $73.8 million Series B funding round. The financing was led by The Column Group, with additional participation from Euclidean Capital, Samsara BioCapital, and Sanofi Ventures. Nura Bio focuses on developing small molecule therapies for neuroprotection, specifically targeting SARM1 inhibitors.
Leadership and Vision
Shilpa Sambashivan, the Chief Executive Officer of Nura Bio, is spearheading the company's efforts to advance its clinical pipeline. "With NB-4746 actively enrolling ALS patients in a Phase 1b/2a study and the rapid advancement of NB-9402, our next generation covalent allosteric SARM1 inhibitor, into a Phase 1a study, we have built a portfolio of SARM1 inhibitors uniquely positioned to fully explore and validate the broad therapeutic potential of this target," Sambashivan noted.
Strategic Use of Funds
The Series B funding will be utilized to further develop Nura Bio's clinical programs, focusing on SARM1 inhibitors. A significant portion of the funds will support clinical proof-of-biology studies for these inhibitors. The company has initiated a Phase 1b/2a study involving ALS patients with NB-4746, an oral, brain-penetrant SARM1 inhibitor. Additionally, Nura Bio has commenced a first-in-human study of NB-9402, a next-generation covalent allosteric SARM1 inhibitor.
Current Developments
NB-4746 has shown promise in preventing axon degeneration by targeting the SARM1 protein, which is crucial in neuroprotection. In preclinical models, it has demonstrated effectiveness in nerve injury and diseases like ALS. Initial Phase 1 studies in healthy volunteers have indicated a favorable safety profile and achieved desired plasma and cerebrospinal fluid exposure levels.
Meanwhile, NB-9402 has entered the clinical stage with a first-in-human study, showcasing high potency and sustained efficacy in preclinical models of neurological diseases.
Looking Ahead
With the backing of prominent investors and a robust research pipeline, Nura Bio is well-positioned to make significant strides in the field of neuroprotective therapies. The continued development of SARM1 inhibitors could provide new avenues for treatment in neurological conditions, including ALS, where effective disease-modifying therapies are limited.
